MACHAP BARU IS a small sleepy township in Alor Gajah district, about 30km from city centre. However, they come alive three times a week when visitors and busloads of tourists flocked to experience the night market, at the lanes, famously known as Machap Walk.

Machap Baru is also famous with wooden restaurants serving exotic meat, but lately, visitors including international tourists especially Singaporeans come to experience the night market there.

Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, more than 100 stalls selling mostly Chinese street food at the night market. The night market starts around 4 pm and ends at midnight.

It is best to come early, around 4 and 5 pm to avoid human traffic and to sample a variety of food from fruit juices, chao tofu, buns and pau and even the flower shaped cotton candy that is popular among the children.

We took a leisure drive from Ayer Keroh to Machap. Just set your Waze to Machap Walk and it would directly bring you to the township.

From Ayer Keroh we passed Kampung Padang Keladi in Durian Tunggal. Turned right and after around 200 meters, turned left and we came into a winding road leading to the picturesque reservoir that has become a favourite place for anglers, before reaching Machap Umboo.

Don’t worry about parking when you reached Machap Baru. There is ample space for visitors to park their cars not far from the night market.

The night market offers an eclectic choice of food for everybody. If you love to sit and dine, the restaurants along the night market offer a variety of rice and noodle dishes.

There are laksa, rendang and even achar and sambal for an appetizer. You could also try roti kok with kaya and the price is cheap!

If you prefer tong yuan or bubur for dessert, well, there is a stall selling all kinds of sweet bubur cha cha, tau suan, bubur bijian hitam, mai zhou or bubur kacang tanah. The price for a bowl is around RM2.40 and RM3.

Don’t forget that yummy cendol as well! And ABC, Malaysians favourite desserts. The price? It’s cheaper than the ones in Banda. Just RM2.50 and you’ll get gobsmacking toppings with peanuts, sweet corn and other yummy tidbits.

Among the food that visitors should try is the red noodle; handmade noodles soaked in char siew broth and served with char siew, fish balls and fish cakes.

It is very popular that the queue can be quite long while table and chairs are limited. Be prepared to eat your meal standing on the roadside.

Another signature dish at Machap Walk is the mushroom buns where it resembles real mushrooms. The bun is soft on the outside and filled with mushroom cream. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the seller when visited the night market, recently.

For those who love juice, you can enjoy watermelon blended juice in its shell with a twist. Or maybe two.

Who knows after a sip or two, you’d be refreshed and gives you a bit of courage to climb up the karaoke stage and sing a song or two to entertain the visitors.

If you’ve seen a video on YouTube on a creative seller selling flower cotton candy in China, well you can get it here too.

The flower cotton candy in Machap Walk is just RM2. Watching the seller making the flower cotton candy is hypnotising.

Do check out Machap Walk night market if you’re in Melaka on the weekends. Although most of the food sold is non-halal for Muslim visitors you can just soak the unique atmosphere and if you fancy some satay, there is a Muslim satay seller at the entrance of the night market.
