SITUATED AT BUKIT Peringgit, Melaka, in the cluster of colonial bungalows, stands Macao Gallery, a special two-storey gallery that showcases Macau’s heritage and culture and its historical link with Melaka.

Opened to public since 2012, the gallery was a joint effort between Malacca and Macao (Macau) governments to raise awareness on the shared culture, heritage and arts between the two Unesco World Heritage Sites.
Just like the olden days of the port town of Melaka, Macau was the confluence of East and West when it was under Portuguese administration from the mid-16th century until the last of the new millennium when it was handed back to the Chinese Government.

Macao became a lucrative port because of its strategic location in the development of international spice trade for the Chinese territory and this combined with better navigational equipment, made long haul sailing became possible in search of lands where spices are grow.
When Portuguese came to Melaka, they brought with them their architecture, culture, heritage and arts. This common historical connections between Macao and Melaka are still evident from the remnants of hundreds of years old monuments and landmarks, heritage that are preserved and cuisines and traditions that are passed down from generations.
While Melaka is proud of its Jonker Street, where traditional wares, antiques and delectable Peranakan, local and Portuguese cuisines are spread, Senado Square in Macau is the centre of cultural activities.

A glimpse of this rich heritage are showcases at the gallery which are divided into four themes; Macao World Heritage exhibition and Events and Festivals on the ground floor, Macao Origins and Culture and Maritime history of Portuguese and Chinese at the upper floor.

The gallery which was a former pre-war building, also features a multi-function room suitable to hold conference, talks, art and cultural activities, and a library complete with multimedia facilities for visitors. On the ground floor, there is also a cosy esplanade for those who want to relax and enjoy the lush green view or have friendly discussions.

The contents and operation of the gallery are financed by the Macau Government Tourism Office while the Melaka Government pays for the upkeep of the building exterior and grounds.
The gallery is opened to public from Tuesday to Sunday and closed on Mondays. The opening hours are from 10am to 5pm and admission is free. The gallery offers guided tours and activities upon request.
