IF YOU ARE LOOKING for some authentic and delightful Malay cuisine especially the traditional Negeri Sembilan food, Watie Corner in Nilai is one place you can head to.
Tucked in a corner, the restaurant is situated near a junction of Jalan Nilai Santalia. This cosy restaurant is almost hidden with big trees and well tended shrubs surrounding it.

Watie Corner has been slowly gaining popularity among traditional food lovers in Malaysia, not just because the owner retained all the traditional recipes, but the food is only prepared once the order is made.
It means, customers are served with freshly made food at Watie Corner. So a bit of patience is needed while your food is being prepared. It is worth it. I promise.
Watie Corner also takes pride in the presentation as well. Unlike many restaurants that use modern tableware either glass, plastic or melamine, at Watie Corner, the plates and bowls are also a delight to one’s eyes.

Not many eateries use ‘old’ tableware for their customers, but at Watie Corner, most of the tableware are from the 1980s and this gives a nostalgic feelings for me. It is like I travelled back to the past, at my grandmother’s house enjoying kampong food for lunch.
And yes, here you also eat with your hands, Asian styled. They don’t provide you spoon and fork. Just head to the wash basin, wash your hands thoroughly and enjoy your food.
For my first time here, I chose a set menu of daging salai masak lemak and cost at RM10 per set. The set comes with a plate of white rice, daging salai masak lemak and ulam with ikan kering, slices of cucumber and sambal belacan. The sambal belacan is phoarrr! (Okay, for a person whose spicy tolerance is moderate like me).

Meanwhile, for drinks I ordered iced lime and pre-dessert, I picked cendol. The cendol was a bit of disappointment. It does not served in crushed ice, instead it is just cendol in coconut milk with palm sugar and ice. So, I was denied of fun in scooping crushed iced with spoon. Yet, the taste still good. Like Ash said: “tak puas!”

Apart from daging salai (smoked meat), customers can also choose for ayam kampung masak lemak. Other set menus include ikan patin (lemak/tempoyak/asam pedas), ikan tenggiri (goreng kunyit/kicap/sambal)
Ikan tenggiri/parang (masak lemak/tempoyak/asam pedas), ikan jenahak (goreng kunyit/kicap/sambal) dan ikan jenahak/merah (masak lemak/tempoyak/asam pedas). All these set is between RM10 – RM17 and comes with a plate of ulam and sambal belacan.
There are also side dishes and ala-carte order and all are traditional Malay dishes. You won’t get any fusion or even Thai dishes here. The restaurant is specialised in Negeri Sembilan Malay cuisine and that is what they serve to their customers.

Mind you that the restaurant is opened at a specific time from 11.30am to 2pm everyday and closes on Sundays.
So, if you want to sample the traditional Negeri Sembilan Malay food, with kampung feel, Watie Corner is the place. Just waze Watie Corner and it will bring you to the location. It is about 50km from Kuala Lumpur.
